Prix Jean François Prat
Reminiscent of Color Field painters like Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis, Landon Metz’ paired down aesthetic points to his time growing up in Arizona. His ink-stained canvasses, often arranged around a space in a sequential installation, have a precision and lightness that reflects his airy studio on Canal Street in Manhattan. Metz is not trying to create singular pieces of work, but open out new ways in which one looks at and exists within a particular space.
Landon Metz (b. 1985, Arizona, USA) lives and works in New York. Recent solo exhibitions were held at Waddington Custot, London (2024); Custot Dubai (2024); Gana Art, Seoul (2023); Sean Kelly, New York (2022); De Brock, Knokke (2022); Von Bartha, Copenhagen (2022); Waddington Custot, London (2021); Von Bartha, Basel (2021); Loyal Gallery, Stockholm (2021) and Francesca Minini, Milan (2020).
I don’t consider myself a painter. I think of myself more as an artist who uses paintings rather than simply makes them. Especially with my latest pieces, the work may be informed by conversations surrounding the medium, but it’s not in any way fixed or limited to them.
